Planting Roses on KCAL 9

when to plant rosesWhen to plant roses:

Growing beautiful roses begins right from the beginning at planting time.  The best time to plant roses is between January and March.  Roses go “dormant” or "fall asleep" during these months so it’s a good time to plant them right before their active growing season starts.

Where to plant rosesWhere to plant roses:

Whether you grow roses in the ground or in containers the first thing you need is the right location. Choose a site that gets full sun or at the least 6 hours of direct light.

Now you have to choose they type of rose. They need room based on how large they get.  From smallest to largest you have:  miniature, bush, hybrid teafloribundagrandiflora and climbers.  Plus, there are specialty plants called tree roses.  Either way, give them the room they need to grow.  Right now we plant bare root roses.  They've been plucked out of the ground and roots wrapped in sawdust and a plastic bag. They are cheaper to buy in the bare root form. If you wait until early spring the nursery will pot them up in containers and they'll be more expensive.

Planting your roses:

Step 1: When you get the plant home, fill up a bucket of water and let the roots of the rose sit in it to absorb the moisture.  In fact, add a few drops of SUPERthrive, with those 50 vitamins/hormones you are sure to lessen the chance of transplant shock.

Step 2: Dig the hole wider than the roots and about 18" deep.  Mix compost with the soil then build an upside down cone in the hole.  Fan the rose plant roots over the cone.  Before backfilling, make certain the bud union is 1" about grade.  If it's lower, make the cone taller until you have it right.

Step 3: Now, backfill whilst pressing the soil firmly in the hole.  Build a 3" basin around the rose to hold water. Your first watering should be with from the bucket with SUPERthrive in it. After that, stand back and watch it grow!
