Welcome: In the Garden
Every 8-10 weeks we pre-record 8-10 segments on the only garden news segment on Southern California’s news station called In the Garden on CBS|KCAL News out of Los Angeles which airs Saturday mornings in the 8AM News hour. Since 2011 Nick Federoff has produced over 500+ segments so we have a strong following with new viewers all of the time.
Nick builds a 3.5-4.5minute story around a garden tip that features your product. The segments are not rehearsed. What you see is what you get! It’s best to give Nick at least two to three bullet points that you’d like him to touch on. He will approach the subject on a consumer level for best understanding. TV is visual so don’t hold back on the samples. We’ll be the judge when we have too much or not enough in the shot. Don’t forget we only highlight products that make sense for the subject: gardening, landscaping, homesteading, urban farming, indoor and outdoor living ideas, sustainable and environmental concepts. Let’s talk to see if you’re a fit.
Each segment is exclusive to Southern California but spans out through several media outlets which broadens the audience reach:
►Broadcast TV: Channel 9
►Online: cbsnews.com/losangeles/live
►CBS News Apps: cbsnews.com/mobile
►CBS Los Angeles YouTube
►Apple TV
►Roku TV
►Amazon Fire TV
►PlayStation via PlayStation Store
►Xbox via Microsoft Store
After the segment airs it can take upwards of a week for it to be made available on-line. We will send you the link or a copy of the segment so you can exploit it as you wish on your website, social media, to your clients, etc.
BONUS: KCAL's sister station is CBS 2, Los Angeles. It’s not uncommon for them to select an In the Garden segment to air in a time slot on the news. We have no control which segments air and when. However, it could be your segment. Crossing your fingers is always helpful. This bonus does not cost you thing. It’s FREE!
Format: Educational. We don’t pitch a product; we educate the audience on what a product is, why it’s used and how to use it. We discover a ‘problem’ (if there is) and how to deal with it. We never say “get 10% off” or “buy one, get one half off” or any of those pitchy things. There’s more power in educating the audience.
There is a TV segment donation that goes to Sustainable Environmental Education, a nonprofit 501 ( c )3 organization earmarked for Project Youth Grow a school gardening outreach. Make sure you contact us at [email protected] for the rate. Oh, by the way...did you know advertising is a write off, too? You need to ask your accountant how that works.
The segment airs in the 8 o'clock news hour. We can't guarantee the exact time but historically it's been between 8:15AM-8:45PM. Keep in mind that this is a news station. If there is “breaking news” it’s possible to get bumped. When this happens they’ll either air it later in the broadcast or move it to the following week. Normally they’ll give us a heads-up if it’s been moved. Take note that this has happened only 4 times over the last 500+ segments that have aired. In addition, we are not responsible if the segment doesn't get posted to their web channels. When we do get the link we'll pass it along to you then post it or upload it to our FB channel.
