Mushrooms

Even though I’m not a big fan of them it’s not fair for me to keep it a secret. Edible mushrooms rank right up there with stepping on a nail – I just don’t like ‘em.
But, that’s no reason why you shouldn’t know how to grow them.

On a commercial level, edible mushrooms are grown in steer manure – and if you know where steer manure comes from – you might not care for them either.

However, you can grow edible mushrooms in your own home.  And should you be successful you will become a mycologist.  The best mushrooms to grow are button mushrooms that are often found in grocery stores.

Other popular mushrooms are the Shitake and Portobello – normally purchased from health food stores.

Since many mushrooms are poisonous and identification is difficult it’s better to get a starter kit from a gardening catalog or from a nursery.

Mushrooms can be started and grown a number of ways from: soaking 25 sheets of newspapers and hiding in a cupboard for a few weeks to growing on logs or in a pile of sawdust.
